Lithops Karasmontana ‘Top Red’ Living Stone, 2-Inch Pot
Lithops Karasmontana ‘Top Red’ Living Stone brings miniature desert texture to a sunny display. Its paired, stone-like leaves have red-toned top markings and a central cleft. Color and pattern vary naturally, making each little plant distinctive. The listing name follows the source.
Points of interest
- One plant head per pot, made up of a paired set of fleshy leaves.
- Red-toned top markings contrast with paler sides.
- Compact growth that resembles a small stone.
- New leaves develop inside the old pair during its seasonal replacement cycle.
Current and mature size
You receive one rooted plant head in a 2-inch plastic nursery pot, not a colony. Photos show representative plants; size, color, pattern, and leaf-cycle stage vary. Lithops remain small and low-growing. A plant may eventually branch into additional heads, but colony formation and timing are not guaranteed. Flowers are not guaranteed at shipping.
Decorative pots shown in styled photos are sold separately. Choose a container with drainage holes and sufficient depth for the roots; avoid oversized containers that hold excess moisture.
Specialized care guide
- Light: Provide very bright light with some direct sun, introducing stronger exposure gradually. Protect from abrupt exposure to intense hot sun. Stretching or unusually tall growth can indicate insufficient light.
- Watering: Do not use a routine water-when-dry schedule. Dry soil alone is not a reason to water Lithops. Consider the leaf-replacement stage, active growth, temperature, and plant condition together. Overwatering can split leaves or cause rot.
- Leaf replacement: Withhold water while the new leaf pair develops and draws moisture from the old leaves. Wait until the old pair has dried into thin, papery remnants before considering resumed watering. Do not pull away old leaves while they remain fleshy.
- Active growth: Once leaf replacement is complete, water sparingly when appropriate and let the mix dry fully between waterings. During active autumn growth or flowering, watering may be needed, but avoid repeated watering of a firm, well-hydrated plant. Seasonal timing varies with growing conditions.
- Summer rest: Plants may rest during hot summer weather. Keep largely dry during dormancy; do not automatically increase watering in heat. If uncertain about the growth stage, assess the plant carefully before adding water.
- Soil: Use a very gritty, predominantly mineral mix with excellent drainage and little moisture-retentive organic material. Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, sold separately, may need substantial additional pumice or other mineral grit for Lithops. Do not assume an ordinary succulent mix alone is suitable.
- Feeding: Lithops have low nutrient needs and generally do not require routine fertilizer. Do not apply the standard houseplant slow-release feeding schedule. If feeding is needed, use a very dilute cactus fertilizer only during suitable active growth and follow the label; avoid feeding during dormancy or leaf replacement.
- Temperature and airflow: Keep frost-free with good airflow. Protect from cold, wet conditions and prolonged outdoor rain. Avoid humid, enclosed displays and terrariums.
- Maintenance: Handle gently and avoid frequent repotting. Watch for soft, translucent tissue or persistent wetness, which can signal excessive moisture. Keep the central cleft free of collected water.
Pet safety: Lithops are generally considered non-toxic to pets.
