Karoo Split Rock (Lapidaria margaretae) is a compact mimicry succulent with thick, angular leaves that resemble small stones. Its sculptural form brings a miniature desert landscape to a sunny windowsill, and established plants can gradually form clusters.
Points of interest
- Distinctive paired, stone-like leaves and a naturally compact habit.
- Slow-growing and drought tolerant, with careful watering more important than frequent attention.
- Mature plants may produce yellow, daisy-like flowers in late summer or fall under suitable conditions.
What you’ll receive and mature size
One live Karoo Split Rock succulent in a 2-inch nursery pot. Plant size, leaf count, and color vary naturally. Individual heads generally remain only a few inches tall; older plants can develop a wider cluster over time. Decorative terracotta pots and other styling props are not included.
Care guide
- Light: Provide very bright light with some direct morning sun. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually and protect from intense afternoon heat, especially behind glass.
- Water: Water sparingly during active growth, allowing the mix to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering greatly during summer heat and other periods of inactivity. When new leaves develop, allow older leaves to shrink naturally rather than watering to plump them back up. Never leave the pot sitting in water.
- Soil: Use a very fast-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix with generous pumice, grit, or perlite and a pot with drainage holes.
- Temperature and humidity: Keep in a dry, well-ventilated location. Protect from frost and prolonged cold or wet conditions; ordinary indoor humidity is suitable.
- Feeding: Fertilizer is optional. If needed, apply a very dilute succulent fertilizer sparingly during active growth, not during dormancy.
- Pruning: No routine pruning is needed. Remove fully dry flower stalks or loose, spent leaves without damaging living tissue.
- Repotting: Repot only when needed, using a modestly larger drainage pot. Handle the roots gently and keep the crown above the soil surface.
- Propagation: Grow from seed, or carefully divide established clusters when distinct rooted offsets are present.
Pet and child safety
