Jumbo Sarracenia Pitcher Plant features a cluster of sculptural green pitchers with contrasting reddish veins and broad, rippled hoods. These specialized leaves trap insects, making this carnivorous plant a fascinating addition to a sunny outdoor display.

Points of interest

  • Distinctive hollow pitchers with patterned veins and flared hoods.
  • A carnivorous plant that obtains nutrients from trapped insects.
  • Color, pitcher number, and fullness vary with season and growing conditions.
  • Identified as Sarracenia; exact species or hybrid is not specified.

Current and mature size

You receive one rooted plant in a 6-inch plastic nursery pot. Photos show representative plants; each living plant varies. The clump can broaden as it develops, but mature height and spread depend on the species or hybrid, which has not been confirmed. The 6-inch measurement refers to the pot, not the plant's height.

Decorative pots and accessories shown in styled photos are not included and are sold separately.

Optional decorative planters

Explore the White BASEL 6-Inch Planter, Black BASEL 6-Inch Planter, White OSLO 6-Inch Planter, and Black OSLO 6-Inch Planter. All are sold separately and have 6.3-inch openings; measure the actual outside width of your nursery pot to confirm fit. These planters have no drainage holes. For this Sarracenia, use them only as removable decorative cover pots, keeping the plant in its plastic nursery pot. Remove the nursery pot for watering and seasonal care; do not plant directly into these decorative planters.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide strong light, ideally a sunny outdoor position. Introduce direct sun gradually after shipping. A dim indoor window is not a suitable long-term growing spot; indoor growing requires sufficiently strong lighting and seasonal care.
  • Water: Use rainwater, distilled water, or low-mineral reverse-osmosis water. Keep the growing medium consistently moist during active growth; a shallow water tray can help maintain moisture. Do not treat this plant like a succulent or allow its root medium to dry out. Reduce standing water during winter dormancy while keeping the medium moist.
  • Growing medium: Use an acidic, low-nutrient medium formulated for Sarracenia, such as unfertilized sphagnum peat with suitable perlite or silica sand. Avoid ordinary potting soil, compost, fertilizer-enriched mixes, and our houseplant or succulent soil blends. Use a plastic or glazed container with drainage rather than unglazed terracotta.
  • Feeding: Outdoor plants generally catch their own insects. Do not add ordinary liquid fertilizer, slow-release fertilizer, or plant food to the soil or water tray. Do not feed meat or force-feed pitchers. Our general houseplant and succulent fertilizer is not recommended for this plant.
  • Pitcher care: Do not fill every pitcher on a schedule. Pitcher-fluid requirements differ among Sarracenia species; follow species-specific guidance once its exact identity is confirmed. Avoid damaging or repeatedly handling the pitchers.
  • Seasonal care: Sarracenia needs a winter rest rather than consistently warm tropical conditions year-round. Cold tolerance varies by species and hybrid, so do not assume a particular frost rating. Protect containers from severe freezing appropriate to your local conditions while maintaining a suitable cool seasonal rest.
  • Maintenance: Remove fully dried pitchers with clean scissors while leaving healthy growth intact. Provide airflow and avoid enclosing the plant in a sealed terrarium.

Pet safety: Sarracenia is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
