Bring home a classic Jade Plant, a long-lived succulent known for glossy green leaves and sturdy, tree-like growth. Starting in a 4-inch pot, this easy-care plant develops thicker stems and a branching shape over time, making it a charming windowsill plant now and a sculptural houseplant as it matures.

Plant characteristics

  • Pot size: Arrives planted in a 4-inch nursery pot
  • Foliage: Thick, fleshy, oval green leaves that may develop reddish edges in strong light
  • Growth habit: Upright and branching, with stems that become woody and trunk-like as the plant ages
  • Mature size: Slow-growing but long-lived; can eventually reach approximately 3–6 feet tall indoors with suitable care, regular repotting, and time
  • Pet safety: Jade Plants are toxic if ingested by cats and dogs and can cause vomiting, lethargy, or loss of coordination. Keep away from pets and children.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide very bright light with several hours of gentle direct sun when possible. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually to avoid scorching.
  • Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Water less often during winter or low-light periods, and never leave the pot standing in water.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix in a container with drainage holes. Pumice or perlite can be added to improve drainage.
  • Humidity: Average to low household humidity is suitable. Avoid constantly damp conditions and provide good airflow.
  • Temperature: Keep in a warm location and protect from frost, freezing temperatures, and cold drafts.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a cactus or succulent fertilizer diluted according to its label, generally every 4–6 weeks. Reduce or pause feeding in winter.
  • Pruning and shaping: Prune leggy or crowded branches with clean tools to encourage a fuller shape. Jade Plants respond well to careful shaping and can be trained in a bonsai-like form over time.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings and healthy leaves can be propagated. Allow cut surfaces to callus before placing them in dry, well-draining succulent mix, then water sparingly after roots begin to form.
