Hylocereus undatus “Dragon Fruit” Cactus – 6-Inch Pot
Hylocereus undatus “Dragon Fruit” cactus brings bold, sculptural greenery to a bright growing space. Also known as white-fleshed pitaya and now commonly classified as Selenicereus undatus, this tropical climbing cactus develops long, angled stems that can be trained onto a sturdy support as it grows.
Points of interest
- A climbing tropical cactus, rather than a compact desert cactus.
- Green, three-sided stems with wavy edges and small spines.
- Mature plants can develop large, night-opening flowers under suitable conditions.
- Fruiting requires maturity, suitable growing conditions and successful pollination. Flowers and fruit are not guaranteed; this young plant is not sold with fruit.
Current size and what ships
One live plant in a 6-inch nursery pot. Plant height and branching vary; the pot size is not the plant's height. This is a young plant, not a mature fruiting specimen. Decorative planters and supports are not included.
Estimated mature size
With warmth, room and sturdy support, mature climbing stems can extend 10–20 feet or more. Container-grown plants can be kept smaller with training and pruning. Growth depends on light, climate, container size and care.
Care guide
Light: Provide very bright light. Introduce direct sun gradually, starting with gentle morning sun; protect from harsh afternoon exposure during acclimation. Indoors, choose your brightest suitable window and consider supplemental light if growth becomes stretched.
Water: Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the potting mix has dried, then allow excess water to drain. Avoid constantly wet soil, but do not subject this tropical cactus to prolonged desert-like drought. Reduce watering during cooler weather and slower growth.
Soil and drainage: Use an airy, fast-draining mix such as our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, sold separately, and a container with drainage holes. Never leave the nursery pot standing in water. Adjust watering to this tropical cactus rather than following a fixed desert-cactus schedule.
Temperature: Keep warm and protect from frost. Bring indoors before cold weather and avoid cold drafts.
Feeding: Feed during active growth, following the fertilizer label and avoiding overfeeding. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is suitable for cacti and is sold separately. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows.
Support and pruning: Add a sturdy trellis or post as stems lengthen. Tie gently without cutting into the stems. Use clean tools and gloves when pruning or handling.
Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container, using a slightly larger pot with drainage. Optional decorative terracotta pots shown in styled photos are sold separately; remove a nursery pot from any outer planter for watering and let it drain fully.
Routine care: Inspect stem joints for pests and adjust light and watering gradually after arrival.
Pet safety: Keep out of reach of pets and children. Small spines can injure skin or mouths; this plant is not intended for chewing.
