Dancing Bones Cactus (Hatiora salicornioides) brings an unusual branching silhouette to a bright indoor plant collection. Its slender, jointed green stems resemble tiny bottles linked together, growing into a bushy cluster that gradually arches with age. Unlike a desert cactus, this epiphytic cactus appreciates filtered light and a more attentive watering routine during active growth.

Points of interest

  • Distinctive bottle-shaped stem segments create a coral-like, branching outline.
  • Young growth is often upright, becoming more arching or gently trailing as the plant matures.
  • Small yellow to orange flowers may appear at stem tips seasonally; flowering is not guaranteed.
  • Its epiphytic growth habit calls for an airy root environment rather than dense, persistently wet soil.

What ships and estimated mature size

You will receive one live Dancing Bones Cactus in a 4-inch nursery pot. Stem height, branching, and fullness vary naturally; blooms are not guaranteed at shipment. Decorative pots, display accessories, additional soil, and fertilizer are not included.

An established plant may reach approximately 12–24 inches tall and wide, with arching stems extending farther over time. These are estimated mature dimensions, not the shipping size. Growth depends on light, age, and care.

Optional growing supplies

Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend is an optional repotting supply; use an airy, freely draining mix suited to epiphytic cacti and adjust with bark or other coarse material as needed for your conditions. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is an optional feeding supply; follow its label directions and feed lightly during active growth. Both products are sold separately. Terracotta pots shown in styling photos are decorative props, not the included nursery container.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide bright indirect or filtered light. Gentle morning sun can be suitable after gradual acclimation, but protect from intense afternoon sun, which can scorch stems.
  • Water: During active growth, water when the upper portion of the mix has dried, then let excess water drain fully. Do not keep constantly wet, but avoid the prolonged bone-dry conditions used for many desert cacti. Reduce watering during cooler, slower growth without allowing stems to shrivel severely.
  • Soil and drainage: Use an airy, fast-draining mix appropriate for epiphytic cacti and a pot with drainage holes. Coarse bark and mineral components can help maintain airflow around roots. Never leave the pot in standing water.
  • Temperature and humidity: Keep in a frost-free location away from cold drafts and heating vents. Moderate household humidity and good airflow are suitable; avoid stagnant, wet conditions.
  • Feeding: Fertilize lightly during active spring and summer growth, following the product label. Avoid overfeeding or fertilizing a stressed plant.
  • Pruning: Trim long or uneven stems with clean tools after flowering or during active growth. Handle jointed stems gently because segments can detach.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or the mix breaks down. Use a draining container only slightly larger than the root ball and avoid packing the mix tightly.
  • Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings with several segments can be allowed to dry briefly before placing in a lightly moist, airy rooting mix. Keep in bright indirect light and avoid saturation.

Pet safety: Keep out of reach of pets and children; this ornamental plant is not intended for eating.
