Crested Blue Candle Cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans cristata), 6-Inch Pot
Crested Blue Candle Cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans cristata) brings sculptural, blue-green color to a sunny plant collection. Instead of growing as a simple upright column, its crested stems form tightly folded fans, rippling ridges and irregular branching shapes. Each plant develops its own living silhouette.
Points of interest
- Crested growth creates undulating fans and folded, coral-like forms.
- Blue-green stems contrast with lighter fresh growth and small clusters of spines.
- Slow growth makes changes in the crest a gradual part of owning this cactus.
- Natural variation means no two plants have exactly the same crest pattern, fullness or color.
What ships and estimated mature size
One live crested Blue Candle cactus in a 6-inch nursery grow pot. The 6-inch measurement refers to the pot, not the plant's height or width. Exact shipping height is not specified; the original photos show representative plants, and crest shape, spine length and fullness vary. Decorative terracotta pots, trays and other styling accessories shown in lifestyle images are not included and are sold separately.
Unlike the standard columnar form, a crested plant develops an irregular, spreading shape. Over many years, a well-grown specimen may reach roughly 1–3 feet across or more in favorable conditions, but container size, light and individual crest growth strongly affect its eventual dimensions. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed mature size.
Care guide
- Light: Choose a very bright location with several hours of direct sun, such as a sunny window. Acclimate gradually when moving into stronger sun. Outdoors, protect from intense midday and afternoon sun during hot weather. Blue coloration varies with light and plant condition; do not force color by exposing an unacclimated plant to harsh sun.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry fully throughout the pot before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain away and empty the saucer. Avoid frequent small sips and prolonged moisture around the base. Water much less during cool or low-light periods, especially when growth slows. Keep water from lingering in the folded crests.
- Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a container with drainage holes. Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend is an optional, separately sold supply. Avoid dense, moisture-retentive houseplant soil or a layer of rocks used in place of drainage holes.
- Humidity and airflow: Ordinary dry indoor air is suitable. Do not mist; provide airflow and protect outdoor plants from prolonged rain.
- Temperature: Keep warm and frost-free. Shelter from cold, wet conditions and bring container plants indoors before frost. Avoid placing the plant against cold window glass.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active spring and summer growth, following the fertilizer label for cactus or succulent use and the container size. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately. Do not overfeed or fertilize a dormant, stressed or recently damaged plant.
- Pruning: Routine pruning is unnecessary. Handle with tools or suitable protection rather than gripping the spines. If an upright, non-crested stem develops, it may be left for contrast or carefully removed with a clean tool to maintain the crested appearance. Keep fresh cuts dry while they callus.
- Repotting: Repot only when roots need more room or the mix has deteriorated, preferably during warm active growth. Choose a stable pot only slightly larger than the root ball, preserve the original planting depth and avoid burying the crest. If roots are damaged, allow them to dry and heal before resuming watering.
- Propagation: Experienced growers can root healthy crest cuttings after allowing the cut surface to form a dry callus. Keep cuttings in a dry, airy cactus medium initially and introduce water cautiously after rooting begins. Crested growth is not guaranteed from seed.
Pet safety: Keep away from pets and children. Sharp spines can injure skin, mouths and paws; this cactus is not a chew-safe plant.
