Crassula ‘Devil’s Horns’ (sold as Crassula hirta) brings a striking, spiky silhouette to a sunny windowsill or protected patio. Narrow, fleshy leaves taper to pointed tips and grow in upright clusters, with green foliage that can develop dark red and burgundy tones.

Points of interest

  • Long, pointed leaves give this succulent its horn-like appearance.
  • Color varies from predominantly green to red-tinted or burgundy with light, season, and growing conditions; deep red color is not guaranteed.
  • Clusters can become fuller over time. Flower stalks shown in some original photos are seasonal and are not guaranteed with your plant.

What ships and estimated mature size

You receive one rooted live plant in a 4-inch nursery pot. Exact height, spread, leaf count, and fullness vary naturally. The pot measurement describes the container, not the foliage diameter. Decorative terracotta pots, furnishings, and supplies shown in styled photos are sold separately and are not included.

An established plant may form a clump roughly 6–12 inches tall and wide over time, with flower stalks extending above the foliage when produced. Mature size varies with growing conditions and is not the shipping size.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide very bright light and some gentle direct sun after gradual acclimation. Protect from sudden intense afternoon sun, especially behind hot glass. Low light can lead to weaker growth and greener leaves; do not deliberately drought-stress the plant to force red color.
  • Water: Let the mix dry thoroughly through the root zone before watering deeply. Drain fully and empty the saucer. Avoid frequent small drinks and constantly damp soil. Check moisture rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.
  • Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend is sold separately. Add a suitable mineral amendment if your growing conditions require faster drying.
  • Temperature: Protect from frost, prolonged cold dampness, and extreme heat. A sheltered outdoor display is suitable only when weather permits.
  • Humidity: Average household humidity and gentle airflow are suitable. Avoid misting and enclosed humid terrariums.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth, following label directions for succulents and container size. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately. Avoid combining full doses of fertilizers or feeding stressed or resting plants.
  • Seasonal care: Growth may slow during temperature extremes. Reduce watering when growth pauses and the mix dries more slowly; do not add extra water or fertilizer to force growth.
  • Grooming: Remove fully dry leaves gently and trim spent flower stalks with clean tools. Handle by the pot to avoid snapping or bruising pointed leaves.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots become crowded or drainage deteriorates. Choose a draining container only slightly larger than the root ball and keep the crown above the soil line.
  • Propagation: Healthy offsets or stem cuttings may root after cut surfaces dry and callus. Use a fast-draining medium and avoid keeping unrooted material wet. Success varies.
  • Pests and problems: Inspect leaf bases and roots for mealybugs. Isolate affected plants and use a labeled treatment, testing a small area first. Soft, translucent leaves or a dark, wet base can indicate excess moisture; inspect drainage and roots before watering again.
  • After arrival: Unpack gently, check moisture before watering, and introduce stronger light gradually. Allow time to settle before unnecessary repotting.

Pet safety: Do not treat this Crassula as pet-safe. Keep out of reach of pets and children and prevent chewing or ingestion.
