The Boobie Cactus, Myrtillocactus geometrizans ‘Fukurokuryuzinboku’, is a distinctive, slow-growing cactus with thick upright stems and pronounced rounded tubercles. Its waxy blue-green form makes a sculptural focal point beside a bright window or on a warm, sheltered patio.
Points of interest
- Distinctive form: Rounded, keel-like ribs create the cultivar’s unusual, bumpy silhouette.
- Color: Blue-green stems with a natural waxy bloom; color can vary with light and growing conditions.
- Growth: Upright and slow-growing, with natural differences in stem shape and fullness from plant to plant.
Size and what ships
One established Boobie Cactus in a 6-inch nursery pot. Stem height and fullness vary. With time and suitable growing conditions, it may reach approximately 20–24 inches tall indoors.
Care guide
- Light: Give it very bright light. Acclimate gradually to direct sun; outdoors in hot weather, protect it from harsh midday and afternoon sun.
- Water: Water thoroughly, then let the potting mix dry completely before watering again. Water less often during cool or dormant periods, and never leave the pot standing in water.
- Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix and a pot with drainage holes.
- Temperature: Keep warm and frost-free. Protect it from prolonged cold and temperatures below 40°F.
- Humidity: Average indoor humidity is suitable. Good airflow is helpful; misting is not needed.
- Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed lightly with a cactus fertilizer diluted according to its label. Skip feeding while growth is paused.
- Pruning: Little pruning is needed. Remove damaged sections only when necessary, using clean tools and careful handling.
- Repotting: Repot when the roots fill the pot or the mix breaks down, choosing a slightly larger container with drainage.
- Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings can be allowed to callus for several days, then set in dry, well-draining mix until rooted.
Pet and child safety
The sharp spines can cause physical injury. Keep the cactus out of reach of pets and children, and handle it carefully.
