Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’ Black Rose Succulent, 4-Inch Pot
Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’, commonly called Black Rose, forms dramatic rosettes of deep burgundy to nearly black leaves with greener centers. Its elongated, spoon-shaped foliage crowns branching stems, creating a sculptural contrast beside lighter succulents. Color varies with light, season, and growing conditions.
Points of interest
- Dark burgundy rosettes with contrasting green centers.
- Elongated, spoon-shaped leaves arranged in layered rosettes.
- Older stems develop a woody, miniature tree-like appearance.
- Growth is often strongest in cooler seasons and may slow or pause during summer heat.
Current and mature size
You receive one rooted plant in a 4-inch plastic nursery pot. Photos show representative plants; height, branching, rosette number, and color vary. Over time, it can develop into a branching shrub approximately 3 feet tall in favorable conditions, though container-grown plants can remain smaller. Mature size and growth rate are not guaranteed.
Decorative pots and accessories shown in styled photos are not included and are sold separately.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright light with suitable direct sun. Introduce stronger sunlight gradually after shipping. Protect from harsh midday or afternoon sun during extreme heat. Indoors, choose your brightest suitable window; lower light can produce greener foliage and stretched growth.
- Water: Let the mix dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain completely. During hot-weather dormancy or markedly slowed growth, reduce watering rather than automatically watering more because it is summer. Never leave the pot standing in water or keep the root zone constantly saturated.
- Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes. Shop our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend, sold separately. Avoid heavy soil and enclosed humid terrariums.
- Feeding: During active spring growth, feed lightly with a slow-release fertilizer. Ready to feed? Shop our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents for steady nutrition for cacti and succulents. Fertilizer is sold separately; follow its label and avoid overfeeding. Skip feeding while growth is paused, especially during hot summer dormancy, or during extreme heat or cold.
- Temperature and outdoor placement: Protect from frost and sudden extremes. Outdoor suitability depends on local conditions; shelter from prolonged wet weather and provide airflow.
- Maintenance: Remove fully dried lower leaves gently. Some leaf shedding and tighter rosettes can accompany seasonal rest. Repot when roots outgrow the container, using fresh, fast-draining mix. Avoid excessive watering in response to normal seasonal slowdown.
Pet safety: Aeonium is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
