‘Netherlands’ Staghorn Fern, 6-Inch Hanging Pot
The ‘Netherlands’ staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) brings sculptural antler-like fronds to a hanging display. Its rounded shield fronds grow around the base, while branching green fronds reach outward. The shield fronds naturally age from green to tan or brown; avoid peeling them away. Frond size, shape, and fullness vary by plant.
Size and what ships
One live, rooted ‘Netherlands’ staghorn fern in a 6-inch nursery hanging pot. Exact height, spread, and frond count at shipping vary. With suitable care, antler fronds and the overall plant can become much larger over time.
Care guide
- Light: Provide bright indirect light or gentle morning sun. Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the fronds.
- Water: Water the potting medium thoroughly when it begins to dry, then let excess drain. Do not leave the roots sitting in water. Adjust frequency to the room and season instead of a fixed schedule.
- Medium: Keep in a loose, well-draining fern or epiphyte mix with airflow around the roots; do not pack heavy, soggy soil around the crown.
- Humidity and temperature: Moderate humidity helps prevent dry edges. Keep warm, away from frost and strong heating or cooling drafts.
- Feeding: Feed lightly with diluted balanced fertilizer during spring and summer growth if needed; reduce in winter.
- Grooming: Leave the shield fronds in place even when they turn brown. Avoid rubbing the fine coating from the green fronds.
- Propagation: Established plants may form pups that can be separated with roots attached. This takes time and is not expected of the young plant shipped.
Pet safety
Staghorn ferns are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though it is best to discourage pets from chewing houseplants.
Optional planter
For tabletop styling, the fern is pictured in the black Oslo 6-inch planter, sold separately. The fern ships in its 6-inch nursery hanging pot, not the Oslo planter. Room furnishings are not included.
