Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) pairs a rounded, water-storing base with long, narrow green leaves that arch like a fountain. Despite its name, it is not a true palm. This small 4-inch-pot plant adds a sculptural accent to a bright desk or shelf; the base shape, leaf length, and fullness vary naturally.

Points of interest and size

  • One live Ponytail Palm in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • A compact tabletop plant at shipment. With many years and suitable care, it can become a larger specimen; that mature size can be 6 feet tall or more.

Care guide

  • Light: Give bright light, including some direct sun once acclimated. A bright window helps maintain sturdy growth; turn periodically for even foliage.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when much of the potting mix has dried, then let excess drain. The swollen base stores water, so avoid keeping the soil constantly damp; reduce watering in cooler, darker months.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average indoor humidity generally suits it. Keep warm and away from freezing conditions and cold drafts.
  • Feeding: During spring and summer growth, use balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label sparingly, about every 6–8 weeks; reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Trim brown leaf tips only if needed, following the leaf shape, and remove fully dry leaves. Do not cut the growing center.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots crowd the container, moving only one pot size up in draining mix and keeping the bulbous base above the soil line.
  • Propagation: If a mature plant develops a rooted offset, it may be separated carefully.

Pet safety

Ponytail Palm is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep its long leaves away from pets that habitually chew plants.
