Euphorbia ferox adds bold texture to a sunny plant shelf with chunky, ribbed green stems and striking red to purple spines. Often called Pincushion Euphorbia, this small succulent makes a sculptural accent on its own and can gradually develop a clustered shape as it matures.

Points of interest

  • A succulent Euphorbia, not a true cactus, despite its spiny appearance.
  • Colorful young spines contrast with the green stems; older spines may darken or fade.
  • Slow-growing and drought tolerant once established, with a preference for bright light and excellent drainage.

Size and what ships

One live plant growing in a 2-inch nursery pot. Plant height, stem count, spine color and fullness vary; pot size is not a guaranteed plant width. Mature stems can reach approximately 6–12 inches tall, with clusters spreading wider over time depending on growing conditions. Decorative planters and styling accessories are not included and are sold separately.

Care guide

  • Light: Provide very bright light and gradually introduce direct sun. A sunny window is a good indoor starting point. Outdoors, acclimate slowly and protect from intense afternoon sun during extreme heat.
  • Water: Allow the mix to dry completely before watering, then water thoroughly and drain fully. Check the soil rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. A 2-inch pot can dry quickly in warm conditions, but watering should be much less frequent during cool weather or when growth pauses. Never leave the pot standing in water.
  • Soil and pot: Use a gritty, fast-draining mix and a pot with drainage holes. Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend is hand-blended in small batches and sold separately. Amend with additional mineral grit if your conditions require faster drying.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and protect from frost. Shelter outdoor plants from prolonged rain, particularly in cool weather, and provide good airflow.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth using our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents, sold separately, following the label for the small container size. Avoid overfeeding and skip fertilizer during paused growth, extreme heat or cold, or root stress.
  • Pruning: Routine pruning is unnecessary. Avoid breaking stems; damaged tissue releases irritating milky sap. Wear gloves and eye protection for any handling that could damage the plant, and keep hands away from your face.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or the mix has deteriorated, preferably during active growth. Use a pot only slightly larger than the root system, protect yourself from the spines, and avoid burying the stem base.
  • Propagation: Experienced growers can divide rooted offsets or use stem cuttings. Handle with gloves and eye protection, keep sap away from skin and eyes, and allow cut surfaces to callus fully before setting into dry, gritty mix. Do not attempt propagation around children or pets.

Pet and handling safety: Keep away from children and pets. Euphorbia is toxic if ingested, its milky sap can seriously irritate skin and eyes, and its sharp spines can cause injury. Seek medical or veterinary advice promptly after exposure.
