Paper Spine Cactus (Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus), 2-Inch Pot
Paper Spine Cactus (Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus) combines gray-green, oval segments with pale, flattened spines that curl like little paper ribbons. This small cactus makes an unusual focal point for a bright windowsill or protected patio display.
Points of interest
- Jointed oval segments stack and branch as the plant matures.
- Flattened, papery-looking spines create a distinctive silhouette, but the plant is not safe to handle bare-handed.
- Segment count, branching, spine length, and coloration vary naturally; new growth and flowers are not guaranteed.
What ships and estimated mature size
You receive one live, rooted cactus in a 2-inch plastic nursery pot, approximately 2–3 inches as described in the source listing. Exact height, segment count, and branching vary. The pot measurement is not the plant’s overall spread. Decorative terracotta pots, top dressing, and furnishings used for styling are not included unless part of the original nursery planting; decorative pots and supplies are sold separately.
Over time, established plants may form branching clumps approximately 6–12 inches tall or more, with a wider spread as segments accumulate. Growth rate and mature size depend on light, root space, season, and care. This estimate is not the shipping size.
Care guide
- Light: Provide very bright light and gradually acclimate to direct sun. Gentle morning sun is a good starting point. Protect an unacclimated plant from intense afternoon sun and hot glass.
- Water: Let the potting mix dry completely through the root zone before watering thoroughly. Allow excess water to drain and never leave the pot standing in water. Small pots can dry quickly, but check the mix rather than watering on a fixed schedule.
- Soil: Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a container with drainage holes. Our Succulent & Cactus Soil Blend is sold separately. Add a suitable mineral amendment if your conditions require faster drying.
- Temperature: Protect this small potted plant from frost, prolonged cold dampness, and extreme heat. A sheltered patio is suitable only when conditions allow.
- Humidity: Average to low household humidity and good airflow are appropriate. Avoid misting and enclosed humid terrariums.
- Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth, following label directions for cacti and the small pot size. Our 2 oz Slow-Release Fertilizer for Houseplants & Succulents is sold separately. Avoid excess fertilizer and skip feeding while growth is paused or the plant is stressed.
- Seasonal care: Reduce watering substantially during cool, low-light periods when growth slows. Never keep roots wet in cold conditions. Resume more frequent moisture checks as warmth and active growth return.
- Handling: Handle by the pot, not the segments. Use appropriate protective tools and gloves. Joints can detach easily; do not pull or squeeze the plant. Keep the delicate ribbon-like spines intact.
- Repotting: Repot only when needed into a draining container slightly larger than the roots. Support the plant carefully and avoid burying upper segments.
- Propagation: Detached healthy segments may root after their broken surfaces dry and callus. Place on a gritty medium and avoid keeping unrooted segments wet. Success is not guaranteed.
- Pests and problems: Inspect areoles and roots for mealybugs. Isolate affected plants and use a labeled cactus-safe treatment. Soft, dark tissue or a persistently wet base can indicate rot; assess roots and drainage rather than adding water.
- After arrival: Unpack carefully without tugging on spines. Check moisture, introduce strong light gradually, and allow any damaged surfaces to dry before watering.
Pet safety: Keep away from pets and children. Spines and tiny barbed hairs can injure skin, mouths, and eyes even when the larger spines look soft. This plant is not intended to be eaten.
