Monstera deliciosa starts as a compact tropical plant with glossy green leaves. As it matures in bright light and gains support, new leaves can develop the distinctive splits and openings Monstera is known for. Young leaves may be solid, so the plant you receive may not yet have fenestrations.

Points of interest and size

  • One live Monstera deliciosa listed at approximately 12 inches tall in a 4-inch nursery grow pot; plant height, leaf count, and shape vary naturally.
  • With years of suitable indoor care and support, it may grow several feet tall with much larger leaves. Mature size is not its shipping size.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light encourages stronger growth and, as the plant matures, possible leaf splits. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of mix dry, then let excess drain. Check the soil rather than following a fixed weekly schedule; reduce watering in cooler, darker months.
  • Soil: Use a chunky, airy aroid mix with bark and perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average to moderate household humidity is generally suitable; keep warm and away from cold drafts and drying vents.
  • Feeding: Feed during spring and summer growth with balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label about monthly; reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning and support: Trim damaged leaves with clean shears. As vines grow, add a suitable support and guide the stems gently without cutting the central growing point.
  • Repotting: When roots crowd the pot, move up one size in fresh airy mix, keeping stems at their original planting depth.
  • Propagation: Root a healthy stem cutting that includes a node in water or lightly moist airy mix; a leaf without a node will not produce a new vine.

Keep away from cats, dogs, and children: chewing Monstera can irritate the mouth.

What you receive and optional planter

One live Monstera deliciosa in its 4-inch nursery grow pot. The white Basel 4.7-inch decorative planter is sold separately. Measure the nursery pot’s outside width before ordering to confirm fit. Basel has no drainage hole: remove the nursery pot for watering, let it drain fully, then return it. Decorative furnishings are not included.
