Hoya Hindu Rope (Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’) packs thick, curled waxy leaves along twisting stems that gradually spill over the pot. Give its sculptural foliage a bright spot and room to trail. Individual plants vary in fullness and length.

Points of interest and size

  • One live rooted Hoya Hindu Rope in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • Compact when shipped. With years of suitable care, vines may trail several feet; growth is generally slow. Mature plants may form fragrant star-shaped flower clusters under favorable conditions.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light, with some gentle morning sun, helps growth and possible flowering. Shield from intense afternoon sun; low light slows growth.
  • Water: Let much of the mix dry between thorough waterings, then allow excess to drain. Water less often in cooler, darker months. Avoid standing water.
  • Soil: Use a chunky, fast-draining mix suitable for epiphytic hoyas, such as houseplant mix amended with orchid bark and perlite, in a pot with drainage.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average indoor humidity is usually fine, though moderate humidity can help new growth. Keep warm and away from cold drafts.
  • Feeding: During active spring and summer growth, feed lightly about monthly with a balanced fertilizer diluted according to its label; reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Trim damaged or unruly vines with clean shears. Leave old flower spurs in place, since they can bloom again.
  • Repotting: Hoyas often prefer a snug pot. Repot only when roots are crowded or the mix has broken down, going up just one pot size in airy mix.
  • Propagation: Root a healthy cutting with at least one node in lightly moist airy mix or water in warm bright indirect light; expect patience from this slow grower.

Pet safety

Hoya carnosa is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but keep leaves out of reach of pets that chew plants.
