Add a soft tropical look to a shelf with Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans), also called Neanthe Bella Palm. Slender green stems carry arching, feathery fronds made up of many narrow leaflets. This is a small tabletop palm when shipped, with a graceful silhouette that slowly develops over time.

Points of interest and size

  • One live Parlor Palm in a 4-inch nursery grow pot.
  • Estimated mature indoor height: approximately 3–6 feet over many years; fronds spread as the plant grows.
  • Current height, frond length and fullness vary naturally.

Care guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light is ideal; it tolerates lower light but may grow more slowly. Protect fronds from strong direct afternoon sun.
  • Water: Water when the top inch of potting mix begins to dry, allowing excess to drain. Keep lightly moist during active growth without keeping roots soggy; reduce watering in winter.
  • Soil: Use a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix with some perlite in a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity and temperature: Average to moderately humid indoor air is suitable. Avoid cold drafts and hot, drying vents; keep in a warm indoor location.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted according to its label every 6–8 weeks. Reduce or pause in winter.
  • Pruning: Remove fully brown fronds near the base with clean scissors. Trim brown tips sparingly if needed, but do not cut the central growing point.
  • Repotting: Parlor Palms prefer not to be disturbed frequently. Check roots every 2–3 years and move up one pot size only if crowded, using fresh draining mix and keeping the original planting depth.
  • Propagation: This palm is typically propagated by seed. Multiple seedlings may share one pot, but individual stems are not stem cuttings and should not be cut off to root; dividing a dense planting can disturb roots.

Pet safety

Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. This ornamental plant is not intended for eating; keep it out of reach of small children.
